PAW in the News

Perception and policy are barriers in the fight for animal rights. Miss Yeow Hui Qi, president of SMU People for Animal Welfare and a second-year accountancy student said, “We've seen big-scale fund-raising events for the less fortunate people. How about one for the animal shelters?”

Indeed, despite the improvement in the animal welfare movement in Singapore, we still have a long way to go before truly being a society that treats all beings equally. Animal welfare activists can help fuel the improvement, but the government has to play a strong supporting role as well.

Ghandi once said, You can judge a person's chartacter from the way he treats animals. How would you judge Singapore's character, then?

Better Dog, Better Owner Dog Care Seminar

Wondering how the Better Dog, Better Owner dog care seminar organized by Petsmagazine went? One of our PAW members, Thomas, shares his experience!

30th May 2009 - Some hundred dog owners and dog lovers gathered at One Marina Boulevard today for the second "Better Dog, Better Owner" seminar organized by Pet's Magazine. The seminar, aimed at coaching owners on how to be a better owner, touched on several different aspects of raising a canine, including veterinary concerns, grooming and obedience training.

The panel of speakers, comprising of vets, trainers, groomers and even pet massage therapists, each delivered an enriching session on their field of expertise, and questions from the audience came hard and fast during the Q&A segments, highlighting the concerns of different owners. The speakers also provided informal consultations over the two refreshment breaks, and sponsoring vendors also gave out free product samples to all seminar participants.

Armed with our newly acquired arsenal of knowledge, I am certain the seminar will make us all better companions to our canine partners. SMU PAW looks forward to the next seminar in 2010, and we definitely encourage all dog owners who missed this year's seminar to head for the one next year. Stay tuned!

E-Luv-PHANTS
E-Luv-Phants.jpgIn Thailand, today, there are only about 4,600 left, representing a 95% decline in the elephant population in just 100 years. To compound the issues of de-forestation, poaching and bad urban planning, elephants are still exported to zoos and circuses overseas, and are even victims of landmines.

Project Elephant Nature Park (ENP) is led by the SMU Ambassadors in partnership with the Elephant Nature Foundation to promote elephant conservation. Project ENP goes down to the Elephant Nature Park to engage in re-forestation as a food-resource for the elephants, building a well in a hill-tribe that is being supported by the Park, filming a documentary to promote public awareness in Singapore regarding the plight of the Asian Elephant, and creating business linkages to boost retails of ENP-made products in Thailand and Singapore as an additional source of income for the Park and its stakeholders.
