Animal welfare in Singapore has come a long way. For years, dedicated and passionate Singaporeans have worked and lobbied for this cause. Animals, both wild and domestic, have benefited tremendously from this.

However, there is still much that can be improved for the benefit of animals in Singapore. This Symposium, Singapore’s first ever, aims to go some way to further the work already done and pave the way ahead for the animal welfare movement. The Symposium is a platform for the various animal interest groups, animal-related organisations and the general public to discuss issues affecting domestic, industrial and wild animals. The panel included Letitia Chang, Amy Corrigan, Deirdre Moss, Dr Lou Ek Hee, Dr Michael D. Gumert, Sandy Lim, Michelle Lee, Dr Leow Su Hua, S.Sandeep Jaganath, Anbarasi Boopal, Vinayagan Dharmarajah, N. Sivasothi, July Lin, Betty Tan, Lau Wen Jin and Esther Tan. The panel was chaired by Jaipal Gill and Louis Ng. Besides discussing, the Symposium also unveiled it's Animal Protecters' Grant - a Grant kindly sponsored by the Lee Foundation, for any groups of people who want to embark on a project that could help animals in Singapore.

Admittedly, there were some heated discussion, disagreements and complaints during the Symposium. But what was important was that everyone in the room had the same intention, the same purpose and the same ideology - that animals matter. We are definitely still far from being perfect in our treatment to animals, but at least we took the first step with this first ever nationwide Symposium on Animal Welfare. A small step perhaps, but a crucial and definitive one. Here's to many, many more steps to come in the coming years.
